| AUDITOR’S EXPERIENCE |
| The clerks at the Sheriff's Office were more than willing to assist me. The woman at the front counter took requests for Form 700s, the robbery/assault requests and the arrest requests.
She said that she hadn't heard of the Form 700 and asked another clerk to come forward.
The second clerk hadn't heard of the Form 700 either and would check on the other two requests.
The second clerk then called the Sheriff's secretary to help find the Form 700. The secretary hadn't heard of the form and suggested I wait for the Sheriff to finish his meeting.
The second clerk asked about the other requests and called the jail (which is next door) to get the list of arrestees for the week.
Meanwhile, the clerks repeatedly told me that there was no access to the crimes requested from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15. They repeatedly told me about the online log that only goes back two days.
The online log is not archived.
The second clerk called the jail and discovered there was no way of listing the arrestees for the Nov. 1 to Nov. 15 period.
The clerk's wanted to double check the information and called the PIO who asked if it was a public information request.
The PIO said nothing other than the past two days was available.
The PIO was then handed the list of questions/requests at which time he identified the person handing him the form. He discovered it was a public records request and that it was conducted by the Monterey Herald.

Letter from the County Counsel for Monterey County
Note: Auditor finds it interesting that all documents were initially denied, and then completely reversed their response later. The Sheriff did admit knowing about the statewide audit. |
