Because Freedom Isn't FreeWe’re getting ready to fight.
Does fight seem too strong a word—almost jarring in a season yearning for peace?
If you prefer, call it a resolve to enforce the laws that keep government open to its citizens, and their speech and writing free from intimidation or punishment. At its coming meeting early next year, our Board of Directors will be asked to approve a litigation policy to regularly pursue court-ordered compliance with the Brown Act, the California Public Records Act and the First Amendment. We will work actively to persuade officials to respect their duties to be transparent and tolerant of speech, and where persuasion fails, we will take their resistance to the only arena that can overcome it—a court of law.
We also have plans to improve and expand our self-help educational programs, including a new comprehensive public records publication, and online training videos. Meanwhile our standard services and programs will continue featuring our members' hotline and public message board.
If you support our resolve, please show it as generously as you can in the only form that can keep us in the fight (instructions are below). And whatever you do, we wish you the brightest cheer in the coming days and the blessings of a prosperous year to come.
Best Wishes and Happy Holidays,
Terry and Emily Francke
